Electronic Ransomware Locks Most File Types
Our research team came across a ransomware called "Electronic" while conducting a routine examination of new malicious file submissions. This malicious software is crafted to encrypt data and then demand a ransom in exchange for decrypting it.
Upon running a sample of Electronic on our test computer, it proceeded to encrypt files and modify their filenames. The original file names were augmented with the email address of the cybercriminals, a unique identifier assigned to the victim, and the ".ELCTRONIC" extension. As an example, a file initially named "1.jpg" would transform into "1.jpg.EMAIL=[electronicrans@gmail.com]ID=[142B4BFB2B4FD9BD].ELCTRONIC."
Once the encryption process was finished, a message demanding a ransom, titled "README ELECTRONIC.txt," was generated. This message from Electronic asserts that the victim's system is vulnerable but assures that the encrypted files can be restored. It instructs the victim to send a locked file to the attackers as a test for decryption, which initiates the recovery procedure. The victim is cautioned against using free decryption software.
