MRN Ransomware Uses Complex Encrypted File Names


MRN ransomware is the name of a newly discovered strain of file-encrypting malware. The new variant belongs to the VoidCrypt family of ransomware clones.

The new ransomware works like most other strains do - it encrypts files on the target system and leaves their contents scrambled and useless. Once MRN encrypts a file, it appends a complex, multi-part extension that contains the victim ID string, the contact email used by the ransomware author and the ".MRN" extension. This will turn a file named "document.pdf" into "document.pdf.(victim ID)(".

The ransomware will affect a lot of popular extensions including documents, media files, archives and databases.

The ransom note is deposited inside a file named "unlock-info.txt". The full contents of the ransom note go as follows:
