How to Turn Off Notifications on Mac

Notifications on your computer are a great way to receive updates, set up reminders/alerts, and improve your schedule. Furthermore, notifications can also help inform you about important software updates or improvements that you do not want to miss. However, there are some apps and websites, which might misuse this feature and spam you with intrusive notifications that do not deliver meaningful content. If you are a Mac user experiencing such issues, then here are some tips on how to turn off notifications on Mac.

Use Do Not Disturb

If you typically do not use notifications, then Mac's Do Not Disturb mode might be the best choice for you. Access it by clicking the icon represented by three horizontal bars next to the menu bar. Go to Notifications and then make sure that Do Not Disturb is switched on. You can also use the same menu to schedule Do Not Disturb menu for a certain period.

Disable App Notifications

If an app is bothering you with unwanted notifications, then preventing it from doing this is a good approach. Open System Preferences –> Notifications and find the app in the list on the right. Select it, and then set its Alert Type to None.

Disable Website Notifications

Browser notifications are regularly exploited by online con artists to deliver unwanted ads to your Web browser. If a particular website is troubling you with such behavior, you can go to Safari -> Safari Menu -> Preferences -> Websites -> Notifications. This will show a list of websites whose notifications you are subscribed to – remove any entries from the list that you do not want to receive updates from.

Google Chrome users can do the same by opening the browser and visiting chrome://settings through the address bar. Open Privacy & Security -> Site Settings -> Notifications. Remove websites that you do not want to see updates from.

Firefox users need to open Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Notifications -> Settings. This menu displays a full list of websites whose notifications are enabled – remove any entries that you want to stop spamming you.
