File Ransomware Goes for a Generic Name
File ransomware is the rather generic-sounding name of a newly discovered strain of ransomware. Despite its bland name, the new variant belongs to the Phobos family of ransomware clones - one of the most infamous malware groups.
Upon deployment, the File ransomware will encrypt files on the victim system, leaving system files intact so the OS can keep functioning and encrypting nearly everything else. Affected files include documents, media, archive and database extensions. Once encrypted, files receive a multi-part new extension that includes the victim's ID, the contact email used by File's operator and the ".FILE" string.
This will make a file previously called "document.doc" turn into "document.doc[victim ID].[teamchic@yandex.com].FILE".
The ransom note is dropped inside two separate files, one plain text and one in .hta format, named "info.txt" and "info.hta" respectively. The full text of the ransom note goes as follows:

Download the jabber (Pidgin) client from hxxps://pidgin.im/download/windows/
After installation, the Pidgin client will prompt you to create a new account.
Click "Add"
In the "Protocol" field, select XMPP
In "Username" - come up with any name
In the field "domain" - enter any jabber-server, there are a lot of them, for example - exploit.im
Create a password
At the bottom, put a tick "Create account"
Click add
If you selected "domain" - exploit.im, then a new window should appear in which you will need to re-enter your data:
