Fake Coinbase Wallet Mimics Legitimate Extension

protect cryptocurrency wallet

There is a rogue browser extension going by the name Coinbase Wallet. The issue here is that there is a legitimate Coinbase Wallet extension, different from the rogue one, and confusing the two can be very easy.

The legitimate Coinbase Wallet extension is distributed through the Chrome web store, with links and support all pointing to the legitimate Coinbase platform. However, the rogue fake Coinbase Wallet extension does its best to copy the original.

The description text you can see in your browser once you install both extensions is the same, reading "Coinbase Wallet extension is the safest and easiest way to use crypto apps in your browser." The fake extension even uses the Coinbase "blue square inside a circle" icon but has an extra element added to the legitimate logo - an orange icon below the circle that looks like a shortcut icon.

Apart from that the two extensions are visually indistinguishable once installed in your browser. However, unlike the legitimate Coinbase one, the fake Coinbase Wallet extension may act as adware and spam your browser with unsolicited and potentially dangerous ads.
