Encfiles Ransomware Joins Amnesia Clone Family
Encfiles ransomware is a newly discovered strain of ransomware. The new variant belongs to the broader family of Amnesia ransomware clones.
The encryption performed once Encfiles is deployed on a victim system will affect most files on all local drives. The ransomware will encrypt media files, archives, databases and documents, leaving them unopenable.
Unlike most ransomware variants that only append a new extension without changing the base file name, Encfiles completely scrambles the original filename as well, so files are completely unrecognizable. A file named "document.doc" might transform into something similar to "1Lo8N8U3oH7MqnQ9.encfiles".
Once encryption finishes, the ransomware drops a file called "HOW TO RECOVER ENCRYPTED FILES.TXT" on the desktop, which contains the ransom note. The full text of the note goes as follows:
Your files are now encrypted!
Your personal identifier: [aphanumeric string]
All your files have been encrypted
