Extreme Sports Wallpapers Browser Extension

browser hijacker popups ads

During the examination of suspicious websites, our research team came across the browser extension known as Extreme Sports Wallpapers. This extension promises to provide users with extreme sports-themed browser wallpapers. However, upon our investigation, we discovered that it operates as a browser hijacker. Extreme Sports Wallpapers alters browser settings to create redirections.

Typically, browser hijacking software assigns promoted websites as the default search engines, homepages, and URLs for new tabs and windows within the browsers. Consequently, when users perform web searches via the URL bar or open new browser tabs or windows, they are redirected to the endorsed website.

In many instances, browser hijackers endorse fake search engines that are incapable of producing search results and simply redirect users to legitimate internet search websites. However, in the case of Extreme Sports Wallpapers, it directly leads users to the Bing search engine (bing.com) without any intermediary. It's important to note that the destinations of these redirects may vary, possibly influenced by factors such as the user's geographical location.

Browser hijacking software commonly employs tactics to ensure its persistence, including limiting access to removal-related settings or undoing changes made by the user, making its removal a more complex process.

Furthermore, software falling into this category often includes data-tracking capabilities, and Extreme Sports Wallpapers may not be an exception. The information collected may encompass visited URLs, viewed webpages, search queries, internet cookies, login credentials, personally identifiable information, financial data, and more. This collected data can be sold to third parties or exploited for profit in various ways.

What Are Rogue Browser Extensions?

Rogue browser extensions, also known as malicious or rogue browser add-ons, are extensions or plugins that are designed to appear legitimate but, in reality, engage in malicious activities. These extensions can be installed on popular web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and others, and they often exploit users' trust and curiosity to gain access to their browsing data or engage in harmful actions. Here are some key characteristics and activities associated with rogue browser extensions:

  • Deceptive Appearances: Rogue browser extensions often mimic the appearance of legitimate and useful add-ons. They may have names, icons, and descriptions that make them seem valuable or reputable.
  • Unauthorized Data Collection: Many rogue extensions collect and transmit user data, such as browsing history, search queries, login credentials, and personal information, without the user's knowledge or consent.
  • Browser Hijacking: Some rogue extensions modify browser settings, such as the homepage, search engine, and new tab page, redirecting users to unwanted or potentially harmful websites.
  • Ad Injection: Rogue extensions may inject unwanted advertisements into web pages or replace legitimate ads with their own. This activity generates revenue for the creators but disrupts the user experience.
  • Fake Security Warnings: Some rogue extensions display fake security alerts, claiming that the user's system is infected or at risk, and then offer to install more malware in the guise of security software.
  • Unauthorized Access: Rogue extensions can gain access to personal information and accounts, potentially leading to identity theft, fraud, or unauthorized use of online services.
  • Spam and Phishing: Some rogue extensions send spam emails, engage in phishing attacks, or distribute malicious links to the user's contacts.
