Broom Cleaner Distributed Through Misleading Websites

While investigating suspicious download websites, our researchers came across the Broom Cleaner application, which is marketed as a tool for enhancing system performance by eliminating unnecessary data and safeguarding user privacy.

The deceptive installer of Broom Cleaner managed to install its activated version on our test computer. However, even though it was fully activated, Broom Cleaner did not function as advertised. Due to this and the questionable methods used for its promotion, this application is categorized as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).

It's important to note that PUAs often come with harmful functionalities and may be bundled with malicious software. They are distributed using various dubious and misleading techniques. The marketing tactic of "bundling," where legitimate programs are packaged with unwanted or malicious additions, is commonly employed for distribution. Furthermore, it's not uncommon for multiple PUAs to be bundled together. Therefore, if one has been installed on your system, the presence of others is also possible.

Some potentially unwanted applications, such as fake antivirus software, may require a purchase for activation. However, even after activation, the promised features may not work. In the case of Broom Cleaner, it was installed on our test system already activated, but this may not be the case in other instances. Consequently, users could be deceived into purchasing software that doesn't deliver its advertised functionality.

As mentioned earlier, PUAs often come with harmful capabilities. They can display advertisements (adware) or promote fake search engines (browser hijackers).

Additionally, PUAs typically track and collect data, which can include browsing and search engine histories, usernames and passwords, personally identifiable information, financial and banking data, and more. This harvested information is then monetized by selling it to third parties, which may include cybercriminals.

How to Watch Out for PUP Bundling and Unwanted Downloads?

To watch out for Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) bundling and unwanted downloads, follow these guidelines to protect your computer and personal information:

Download Software from Trusted Sources:
Obtain software from official websites or reputable sources. Be cautious of third-party download sites, as they often bundle software with unwanted extras.

Read EULA and Installation Prompts:
When installing new software, carefully read the End User License Agreement (EULA) and any installation prompts. Look for checkboxes that may indicate bundled software and uncheck them if you don't want the additional programs.

Choose Custom/Advanced Installation:
During the installation process, select the "Custom" or "Advanced" installation option rather than the "Quick" or "Recommended" one. This gives you more control over what gets installed.

Review Software Installation Options:
Examine the list of components that the installer offers to install. Deselect any additional programs or browser extensions that you don't want.

Check the Source's Reputation:
Research the software and its source online. Read reviews and look for user feedback about bundled software or unwanted downloads. If there are many complaints, consider avoiding the download.
