PC Monitor is Flickering - Causes and Solutions

A flickering monitor is a major inconvenience and is not something you can or should put up with. There are a number of reasons that may be causing that behavior but thankfully most of them are easy to sort out.

The issue may be caused by both hardware and software, so you should check both to find and eliminate the issue. When it comes to software, the thing you need to do is simply update your GPU drivers.

Visit the website of your respective GPU manufacturer - NVidia and AMD for discrete GPUs and Intel or AMD for onboard cards and APUs. Download the latest version that matches your Windows version and install the driver package.

If this does not help with the flicker, chances are you are dealing with a hardware issue. Again, thankfully, the most common causes for hardware-induced monitor flicker are very easy to deal with.

Check both the signal and power cables of your GPU and monitor. Loose plugs and connections can easily cause flickering image. Make sure all your cables are well-connected. If you have doubts about whether a cable has some internal breakage you can't see, try using a different power or signal cable.

If the issue still persists, you may want to double-check your chosen refresh rate setting inside Windows. To get to the Windows settings menu that allows you to change your refresh rate, right click your desktop, next choose Display Settings. Click on "Advanced display settings" in the central panel of the new window.

Use the dropdown box to select the maximum refresh rate supported for your resolution. To find what that is, you may need to refer to your monitor's manual.

If you are using a relatively cheap, run of the mill monitor, chances are you want to select 60 Hz as your refresh rate.

If none of those suggestions help with your monitor's flickering issue, you may need to take the hardware to a qualified technician and have it examined for faulty components.
