Acer Hit by Second Hacker Attack Within Seven Days

After Taiwanese hardware manufacturer Acer suffered a cyberattack on its Indian branch last week, the company has now confirmed a second instance of an attack. This time the hackers targeted the company's infrastructure located in Taiwan.

The new attack is the work of the threat actors going by the name of Desorden Group, according to reports. ZDNet reported that the hackers got in touch with them and claimed that they executed a second attack on Acer's IT systems just to drive a point home.

According to the online publication, the hackers stated they hit Acer again to show that the hardware manufacturer is "way behind" in terms of cybersecurity and has what the hackers called a "global network of vulnerable servers".

A spokesperson with Acer stated that the company detected what it calls "an isolated attack" on its Indian post-sale service infrastructure, followed by the latest attack on Taiwanese systems. The spokesperson also stated that Acer has notified all relevant authorities, including Taiwanese law enforcement.

Desorden claim that the Taiwanese systems they attacked contained employee data and some of it has been exfiltrated. Acer stated that the Taiwanese servers did not contain any sort of customer-related information.

The Desorden Group has withheld any further comments on the motivation behind its attacks on Acer, despite attempts on part of ZDNet to contact them for further information.

The previous attack on Acer's servers located in India involved the theft of around 60 gigabytes of information, including customer and retailer information. Desorden Group, who were behind the initial attack once again, even put up a 10,000 record sample of the stolen information to prove they had it and went to put the stolen data up for sale on the dark web. Acer was also targeted by the REvil ransomware gang back in early 2021, with an alleged ransom demand of $50 million being made back then. Acer's offer to pay a much more reasonable $10 million was refused by REvil's operators.
